Ok, here are some tips and guidelines to make your RPGing better. Even if you think you're good, read this. It could help you get better.
I'll give you some basic tips:
* Put your thoughts/narrative in a different color or format then your spoken words. For instance, some put theirs in quotation marks (" "). * Keep your spelling and grammar good. Just use a spell or grammar check from the internet if you don't have one on your computer. I know English grammar is hard, but you can make it readable. For starters, capatalize proper nouns (names, places, etc...) and the start of every sentence. Put commas in their proper place, and seperate the end of one sentence and the beginning of another. * Be descriptive. Describe what your character is thinking, feeling, doing, saying. The more descriptive you are, the more other people are able to "see" what you are doing, and it is better and seems more real, but also know when to draw the line. * You can't control other peoples actions. If someone doesn't say something, or put an emotion on their face, you cannot put it there for them. * Don’t write shorthand. Spell things out. For instance, don’t write o, write oh. Don’t write btw, write by the way, stuff like that.
I can't think of anything else. If I think of some I'll add them later. If you have anything else that you would like to add, just add it here! (Put it in a bulletted list like I did.) If you have any questions, or anything, feel free to ask!
UPDATE FROM -[-Book of Mages-]- These are only the basics to role-playing, if you need to know more ask one of the more experienced role-players who will probably tell you what you are doing wrong and how to improve..
What is role-playing Role-playing is text based fighting with stories and backgrounds for an imaginary character. The aim of the game is to win a match this not does mean you kill your opposition.
How to describe your character and points to use Here are some things you can use to describe your character, different groups may recruit different members. -Personality -Appearence -Skills and Moves -Likes/Dislikes -Background -Where they originated (this does not always apply) -And anything else you can think of..
Please remember you cannot have a character that can never get hurt
This is the first lesson, how to set up characters. Next lesson will be uhh, havent figured out yet...
LESSON 2: ROLEPLAYING A CHARACTER
If you have your character set up, its really quite easy to roleplay. But there are a fews rules you have to follow. Where there is a '*' there will be an example at the bottom.
#1 No godmoding. Godmoding is where you control someone else's character without permission. Its very rude, and it makes you seem unintelligent.
#2 Literacy is always appreciated. Literacy is being able to read posts. Its using complete sentances and proper grammer, not to mention at least a reasonable attempt at proper spelling. Paragraphs are also a big part of being literate. If you want to use large words, make sure that you understand what it means, and how to use it properly in a sentance. Literacy is not, chatspeak. It will never be chatspeak. Things such as 'R u ready?' make it seem as though you don't truly want to put the effort into your roleplaying as it deserves.
#3 Though it's not always expected, writing in the third person tends to be a standard that will not be broken. In certain roleplays, typing in first person will be allowed, most are more easily done in the third person. As a reminder, first person is when you're talking about yourself "I want, with ME, that's MINE" That type of speech is used when your character speaks.* Second person is where you're talking to someone. "Could YOU" That again, is used in speech patterns of your character.* The third person is where you are talking about someone. "THEY are, THOSE people" This will be what your posts should be written in.*
Now that the ground rules have been laid out, a sample paragraph of what a good roleplay post would be shall be given!
*** She looked around quickly at her surroundings, there was nothing. She couldn't sense her opponent anywhere, and it made her nervous. Adjusting her grip on her katana, Sihara could practicly feel her opponent's gaze upon her. "Come out here and face me, you coward!" Her voice rang through the humid midday air, tension, a palpable element in her aura. ***
LESSON 3: FIGHTING
Okay In GODMODDING:
no autohitting... no fighting without human limitations...(without Weaknesses, etc.) no godly characters...
I mean, Come on People!!! Who wants to be a cheating NOOB?((Ehem, sorry))
When someone or somebody is talking try to use quotation marks and state who said it. EX: "Watch out Hermione!!!" Yelled Rona and Harry at the same time. Script writing is very hard to understand... EX of Script writing: Samin: *attacks* Take this, Narmontuna!!!
When your describing what that person did then describe what that person did. You can use still * but don't use it as much. Ex: Shippo ran behind the tree to escape from danger Instead of: *runs off*
Use OOC (Out Of Character) when your talking about something that doesn't relate to the topic. Ex: OOC: I know that was funny! Or (())
Use IC (In Character) when your roleplaying again so people will understand. Ex: IC: Hagrid then walked towards the river....blah...blah...blah
Book of Mages-sama: I wrote these my self, please, DO NOT STEAL! I made the how to Roleplay for my friend's Harry Potter site, and all those paragraphs took over TWO HOURS TO WRITE. I put my heart and soul into it, so please don't playgerize and say you made it. If so, you ar a meanie!!! (jk, but you'd be mean to playgerize this...)
